Overview:
The K-12 Science Grant was a success. Although we didn’t achieve the
stated goal of 50 students, we had an overall turnout of 30 students.
Both teachers involved observed a greater interest in the FCAT science
content, and an increase in performance, confidence and motivation in
students who attended tutoring. The tutoring sessions were held on
Fridays from 3-4 p.m. Some students had to work after school, and others
could only stay for 30 minutes. These students were not counted in the
total because they did not stay for the entire session.
Target Population:
Among the 30 students, 11 were ESE, 6 were ESOL, and the remaining 13
were general education students.
Statistical Outcomes:
The grant success can be measured qualitatively, as evident in grade
improvements in progress reports on Edline:
Pre-Test Cumulative Percentage: 51%
Post-Test Cumulative Percentage: 63%
Percentage Gain: 12%
Closing Comments:
The successful outcome of the grant can be qualitatively observed in the
improvement of students’ attitudes towards science in the classroom
setting. Also, the students got the opportunity to socialize in a least
restrictive setting after school where they felt confident asking for
help, and helping others in community groups.
